Minim
Your Personal Beat-Driven Playlist Companion

problem
The brief asked: "Design a product that highlights the benefits of embracing the randomness of people, music, and biology." After weeks of exploration, this led to Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) the most common heart rhythm disturbance, affecting 1.4 million people in the UK. The opportunity: make awareness of irregular heartbeats approachable and even joyful, through music.
solution
Minim is your ultimate music companion, revolutionising the way you experience your favourite tunes. With Minim, your heartbeat becomes the DJ, curating playlists tailored precisely to your unique beats per minute (BPM). Your BPM is connected through a smart ring - that sends data to the app.

What if your heartbeat could become a playlist?
That was the question I started with. For my MA module at Falmouth, I was given one provocation: reinvention. Rather than reinvent a product or a visual language, I wanted to reinvent how people relate to their own bodies specifically their heart health.
Most people don't think about their heart until something goes wrong. Through journey mapping five real AFIB patients sourced from Reddit communities, I found a consistent pattern: people ignored early signals flutter, irregular rhythm, chest tightness because they had no playful, non-clinical way to understand what was happening inside them. The problem wasn't a lack of medical technology. It was a lack of emotional access.
My research took me across disciplines randomness in music, generative composition, the science of tempo and heart rate, arrhythmia in biology, and behavioural psychology. One insight anchored everything: humans have a natural preferred tempo of 120–130 BPM, which mirrors our resting cardiovascular rhythms. Music and heartbeats aren't just metaphorically connected they're biologically linked.
This became Minim: a BPM-tracking smart ring paired with a Spotify-integrated app that curates playlists in real time based on your heart rate. Working out, winding down, or somewhere in between — your music moves with your body.
I designed the full product ecosystem: brand identity, app UI across 10+ screens, a 3D ring prototype modelled in Blender, and two promotional commercials. Every decision was made to feel human-first, not clinical: soft gradients, friendly iconography, and a tagline that said it all: Harmony in every beat.
Minim taught me that the best health design doesn't feel like healthcare at all. It feels like something you actually want to wear.
